Closing Line Value Explained – How to Track CLV | BookieBrawler
Closing line value is, why it's the best predictor of long-term profitability, and how to track your CLV.
What Is Closing Line Value?
The closing line is the final set of odds before an event begins. It's considered the most efficient line because it incorporates all available information and market action. CLV measures whether the odds you got when you placed your bet were better than the closing line.
CLV Example
You bet the Chiefs -3 (-110) on Tuesday. By kickoff, the line has moved to Chiefs -4 (-110). You got a better number than the closing line - that's positive CLV. Even if the Chiefs lose, you made a mathematically smart bet.
Why CLV Matters More Than Results
Short-term results in sports betting are heavily influenced by variance. You can make great bets and lose, or make terrible bets and win. Over hundreds and thousands of bets, CLV is the best predictor of profitability because it measures the quality of your decisions, not the randomness of outcomes.
How to Track CLV
- Record the odds at which you place each bet
- Compare to the closing line before the event starts
- Calculate the percentage difference over time
- If you consistently get better odds than closing, you have an edge
