Daily Fantasy Sports Beginner Guide – How to Play DFS | BookieBrawler
How daily fantasy sports work. Covers contest types, platforms, strategy, and how DFS compares to traditional sports betting.
How DFS Works
In a typical DFS contest, you're given a salary cap and must draft a lineup of players within budget. Each player has a price based on their expected performance. Your lineup earns fantasy points based on actual stats - touchdowns, yards, points scored, rebounds, etc. The best-performing lineups win cash prizes.
Types of DFS Contests
- GPPs (Guaranteed Prize Pools): Large tournaments with big prize pools. Top-heavy payouts reward the best lineups.
- Cash games: Head-to-head or 50/50 formats where the top half wins. Lower variance.
- Single entry: One lineup per person - levels the playing field against multi-entry sharks.
Major DFS Platforms
- DraftKings: Largest DFS platform with the most contest variety
- FanDuel: Clean interface, strong NFL and NBA contests
- Yahoo DFS: Smaller but less competitive player pools
DFS vs. Sports Betting
DFS is classified as a game of skill in most states and is legal in more states than sports betting. However, the edge goes to experienced players who use data, projections, and ownership percentages to build optimal lineups.
