What is Handicap Betting? Handicap Bets Explained | BookieBrawler
Handicap betting is, the difference between Asian and European handicaps, handicap vs point spread, and strategies for handicap betting in soccer and other sports.
What Is Handicap Betting?
Handicap betting gives one team a virtual advantage (or disadvantage) before the game starts, leveling the playing field. The favorite starts with a negative handicap (must win by more), while the underdog gets a positive handicap (can lose by a margin and still "win" the bet).
Handicap vs. Point Spread
In American sports betting, handicaps are called "point spreads" or just "spreads." The concept is identical - the only difference is the naming convention. European and Asian sportsbooks use "handicap" while American books use "spread."
Types of Handicap Bets
- European Handicap: Whole number handicaps (0, 1, 2) - draws are possible, creating three outcomes
- Asian Handicap: Quarter and half handicaps (0.25, 0.5, 0.75) - eliminates the draw, splits stakes on quarter lines
- American Spread: Typically half-point lines (-3.5, +7.5) - two outcomes only
