What is an Over/Under Bet? Totals Betting Explained | BookieBrawler
Everything you need to know about over/under betting: how totals work, what happens when you push, over/under strategies, and examples across NFL, NBA, and MLB.
What Is an Over/Under Bet?
An over/under bet is a wager on the total combined score of both teams in a game. The sportsbook sets a number (the total), and you bet whether the actual combined score will be over or under that number.
Over/Under Example
Let's say the total for a Chiefs vs. Eagles game is set at 48.5:
If the game finishes 28-24 (52 total), the over wins. If it finishes 17-14 (31 total), the under wins.
- Over 48.5 (-110): You win if the combined score is 49 or more
- Under 48.5 (-110): You win if the combined score is 48 or less
What Happens When the Total Lands Exactly on the Number?
If the total lands on a whole number (like 48.0 and the combined score is exactly 48), the bet is a push and your stake is refunded. That's why most totals use half-points (like 48.5) to avoid pushes entirely.
Factors That Affect Totals
- Weather: Wind, rain, and cold tend to suppress scoring (especially in football)
- Pace of play: Fast-paced teams create more scoring opportunities
- Injuries: Missing key offensive players lowers expected scoring
- Defensive matchups: Elite defenses suppress totals
- Venue: Some stadiums are higher-scoring (e.g., Coors Field in MLB)
